Name of culture/country: Ilma'tarit(People of the coast)(Ilma-People, Tarit-Coast)
Map:
The Ilma'Tarit are a maritime people, having lived along the coasts of the land they call Ta'Mal(Land of Ancients)(Ta-Land, Mal-ancients) for millennia. A generally rugged terrain to the west and north, and throughout the center of the peninsula, resulted in the settlement along the coasts, where food was plentiful for them in the form of fishing and, to some degree, farming. The people themselves differ in appearance depending upon where they are found. Those on the peninsula tend towards darker skin, with anything from olive to dark brown being common. Those beyond the peninsula are often fairer, as generations of intermixing with the mountain clans to the west and north have led to lighter skinned Ilma'ar. While skin tone is by no means an important distinction, hair color has become a defining feature among the people, with those having lighter shades of hair(general the mainlanders) forming an elite class which dominates over the rest of the society. Average in stature, though sturdy in build, a society built around trading within the inland sea that separates the peninsula from the mainland(Lo-Rit)(Literally "Little Water")has led to weak individuals being weeded out, with only the strongest living on to fish and trade on the waters.
Their legends tell of a great king, Malat, who came from the mountains on a great beast of water, and subdued the warring clans one by one until he had established a single realm along the coast. His empire prospered, as clan leaders, now under the guidance of a wise and powerful king, became traders, bolstering the economy with interior trade, as well as risky yet profitable external trade. The land prospered, and it is said upon his death, Malat ruled an empire that stretched from La-Rat to the mountains of the west. It is said his spirit soared to the heavens, and that one day, a ruler shall be endowed with said spirit, and bring order and justice to the land once more. His 3 sons, Tamal, Ritmal, and Bomal(Bo-sky/heavens) divided rule between themselves. Tamal would rule the land, Ritmal the sea(as a commander of the navy) and Bomal the skies(as the head of the cult in honor of their father, who would be worshipped as the savior of the world, and destined to rule the land once more). Over generations, the descendants of these 3 would feud and squabble, leading to the disintegration of the empire into petty clans once more who have retained the trader identities they forged under Malat's Empire
Presently, the Ilma'Tarit are in a state of transition. To capture the spirit of the empire, the various trader clans have come together to form a trading empire of sorts. 7 clan leaders from the former empire have joined their lands together, and now form a trader council that now acts as a de-facto government as well. Responsible for the regulation of trade within and beyond the empire, as well as the political course this new nation shall take, only time shall tell what the future holds.
The clans all adhere to the Cult of Malat, which as mentioned previously, believes that one day an individual shall be imbued with Malat's spirit and claim what was his empire once more, restoring the world to order and peace. The Ilma'Tarit celebrate the birth of Malat, and give special reverence to children born on this day, educating them in the ways of rule, military command, and trade, believing that they are the inheritors of the spirit. Oftentimes, these children(regardless of gender) are made clan leaders, with 6 of the current 7 clan leaders of the council having been born on this day. A high preist or priestess descended from the line of Bomal(and thus descended from Malat) acts as head of the cult. Each clan regularly send some of their children to the temple of Malat, where they are instructed in the ways of the cult by the High Priest(ess), and then sent back to their clans to teach them the proper ways of worship.
The technology level of the Ilma'Tarit could be described as typical of the time and region. Frequent trade within the empire, as well as beyond into the great sea(Li-Rit)(Literally Big Water) has led to cultural and technological exchange and learning which has allowed the Ilma'Tarit to stay relatively up to par with other peoples. The Council of 7 has begun construction of a great city where the mainland and the peninsula meet, to act not only as a symbolic symbol of unity among the people, but to also stand as a center of cultural, technological, and economic exchange in the region.
The Ilma'Tarit generally aim to have cordial if not friendly relations with other peoples. Though understanding they may not share the same faith or cultural practices as them, the trade opportunities which many of these groups present are seen as a necessity, and thus friendly relations are encouraged. A certain offshoot of the Cult of Malat, found predominately on the southern tip of the peninsula, has even encouraged the notion that foreigners are just as likely to inherit his spirit(as he himself was not of the coast, but of the mountains.)
